Throughout history women have been oppressed in a patriarchal society. Their role was to please the men, bear the children and stay in the home. However, the 19th century brought about new opportunities for women and role changes. Some had to fight for them, some had to choose between social acceptance and freedom and some had to wait for the right opportunity. The next few articles will show the evolution of the social and political roles of women in the 19th and 20th centuries.

American Houses: Constructions of History and Domesticity
American Houses: Constructions of History and Domesticity

In this article Browne counters the 19th century arguments that said women are to stay in the home and nurture the country through their domestic duties. Browne counters by saying that through the free market and economy women can have both career and family.
This article shows in the 19th century women were demanded in the home, for not only their family but for their country. A woman's role was turned into a patriot by staying in the home.

Of Women, Poetry, and Power: Strategies of Address in Dickinson, Miles, Brooks, Lorede, and Angelou (review)

This review of women authors like Dickinson shows that if women rebelled and changed their role in the slightest they paid the consequences like not being married, having children, and living at home with their parents or living alone. Dickinson wrote to her heart's content, but never married and lived alone. She is the example of a time when women had to choose between conforming and being a wife and mother or fulfilling their personal identity.

The Rise of the Fallen Woman
The Rise of the Fallen Woman
The Rise of the Fallen Woman depicts how women not following the conformist role were considered "fallen". It states that fallen women were condemned and admired; both winning their fight for a different path in life and losing their role as "proper" women. Fallen women were blamed for economic and community moral downfall, but admired for their success if it happened.
Women and Dixie: The Feminization of Southern Women's History and Culture
Women and Dixie: The Feminization of Southern Women`s History and Culture
Women and Dixie starts to show the change in the role of women in the late 19th century. The elitists in the south accepted writing of women socially. It started to become revered as a quality in a prize daughter for marriage. A woman's role in accordance to writing swiftly changed during the civil war because they helped with correspondence and recent happenings in their prospective areas.
Signatures of Citizenship: Petitioning, Antislavery, and Women's Political Identity (review)
Signatures of Citizenship: Petitioning, Antislavery, and Women`s Political Identity (review)
In the early to mid 19th century women gained a political role as slavery abolitionists. The female activist was born, however she didn't look like she does today. Most women would be more reserved and try to underscore slavery abolition in a very undertone way so not to upset male superiors. None the less, politics made its way into a woman's role.
The 19th and 20th centuries, women struggled to change their roles in society and politics. With ever changing social rules and making hard decisions to become socially outcast, women have succeeded in taking more hands on roles. Their struggles have paved the way for women today, giving us the opportunity to not only be professionals but also wives and mothers.
