From the first time explorers stepped on America they saw a land of opportunity and saw people who could help. To the first Indians that were used for slavery to the Africans that would go through harsh times just to survive by what the white people wanted. Life as a slave was not a fun time. The life of a slave changed over time, but during that time different races, different way of life, and how they were treated would change many times.

The journal of Columbus' first voyage : "Columbus"
The journal of Columbus` first voyage : "Columbus"
When columbus arrived he was looking for the three G's, god, glory, and gold. He found these things but he found Inidans too. He wrote that it seemed that they would be very easy to get them to practice Catholicism. The Indians belived that there was a god and god had sent Columbus to them. These made it much easier for Columbus to contorl the indains. He asked for them to return in the moring because he wanted to take a couple indains back to France. These was the first of slavery in the America, because the Indians thought they were sent by the gods they would do anything for Columbus and he would abuse that power.

History of Plymouth plantation 1620-1647
Many years later a man named Bradford came to America and lived in the Plymouth plantation. Here is were slavery started to take fool affect to the Indians. The new Americans wanted food and wanted more land and the Indians could help. The Indians showed them how to plant corn and survive in the wild. Also the Americans needed more land to plant these crops and the Indians were in there way. The Indians had to choose to work for them or die for there freedom. Some Indians would work and in the Pequot war would fight because they were forced to. To Bradford this was a big gain, he was in control of a population who could do nothing but listen to him or they would die.

Notes on the state of Virginia
This was the beginning of many different things. At this time you saw the switch from the Indians to the African slaves. Also you saw the treatment of the new slaves were not good at all. When brought to the Americas, slaves were put in boats packed to the top, and many died because they were not taken care of at all. Jefferson talks about the Africans and compares them to what the Romans did. In his book he says that if a slaves master was killed than any slave that lived there would be condemned to death. The slaves had no chance to prove that they were innocent. This was just the beginning of the torture they would go through.
Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass, an American slave
Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass, an American slave
Douglass was the first slave to write and show what the life was like as a slave. In his writings he shows how slaves were treated. He talks about the clothing they get. They get two out fits a year. I ware about 6 different out fits a week and have 5 different blue jeans. To have two sets of clothing and work in the conditions they did would be very hard. In a matter of six weeks there clothes would be torn, dirty, and ruined. He also talks about what would happen to them if they tried to run away. As punishment they would whipped, and would be taken to a slave-trader to remind the slaves remaining that disobeying was not an option.
Fugitive slaves (1619-1865)
This picture is of a slave during this time. Hes back is torn up from being whipped over a thousand times. Many slaves would get this torture for many reason. They would not be working hard, tried to run away, did not obey, talked back to master, or just because the master felt like taking hes anger out on a slave. The slaves could not do anything. If they did they would be killed and most Americans did not have a problem with the torture the slaves went through. The slaves were put in a harsh world and they were at the bottom of the totem poll.

anti-slavery (1619-1865)
Before entering the civil war slaves started to stand up and fight for there freedom. With encouraging words from Douglass book slaves were trying to get free. Also whites were standing up as well. Hold anti-slavery meetings discussing was to stop this madness. Slaves would escape through the underground rail road. Was a system designed to get slave to the Masen-dixen line. White people would help knowing that they could be killed doing this. Also President Lincoln supported the anti-slavery. Was a friend of Douglass. Douglass would talk to Lincoln and show him what was happening to the slaves.
Slaves have had a crazy life from the beginning of time. In America it started with the Indians helping and being forced to fight with the Americans, to the African slaves being whipped and forced to do the work while White Americans set back and watched. Until the civil war Whites could treat slaves how every they wanted to and know one would say anything about it. The slaves lived in the hashes conditions and could not do anything about it.
