Much of the history of our nation deals with slavery and the battles that were fought in the name of one side or the other. Policies in some regions exist because of events that occurred back then and we are well aware of the way that slavery has shaped our government and individual lives today. Because of slavery great men took office and made change and forever changed the path of our nation.

Ham`s Vicious Race: Slavery and John Milton
Slavery has existed throughout the ages, from native americans to african tribes people. In some of the earlier recorded cases such as with the native americans the people were considered "slaves by nature" as they could not provide for themselves. They were considered incompetent and could not be left to govern themselves. Slavery was both a thing of cruelty, but to those who enforced it was also a way of life and even enforced by religion.
Slavery is said to have affected more than just the history of the Africans but also their very identity. The question is how they are to be defined, whether it be those poor awfully treated Africans or the slaves whose very pain made them into strong free men. Slaves of the old world, free men of the new, the points of view are endless, but both point out exactly how diverse the understanding of slavery and its relevance can be.

[Untitled Review]
The document discusses arguments that have been written throughout time about the nation and its origins. Of course slavery is a heavy topic as it divided the nation in believers, North and South. The Civil war was a pivotal point in the nation's history and is discussed here as specifically as what region is deemed friendly and unfriendly.
The history of the nation and slavery have been has been topics of argument among scholars, critics, and slave narrators for quite some time. These things rarely can be agreed on since there are so many different points of view and documentation to prove them. Slavery has existed on a large scale and in smaller ways such as the restrictions of the female population.

The Flag Controversy and the Causes of the Civil War: A Statement by Historians
The Flag Controversy and the Causes of the Civil War: A Statement by Historians
The document discusses the controversy of the flags and what eventually led to the Civil War. The nation was divided in two and the fight mainly stemmed from the argument over slavery and whether or not it should be allowed. Parts of the nation have been marked by this battle and people observe the shaping that those events have had on our lives today.
A work that firmly demonstrates the suffering of slaves and then recovery is a narrative written by a slave named Frederick Douglass. He documented his trials and pains as a slave after many years of struggling to learn to read and write. One he accomplished this his narrative began. We can learn from these stories and put ourselves in his shoes as we attempt to better understand slavery and its connection with our lives and our country.

Regardless of our recognition slavery has shaped our lives and our country. It was an evil that produced a greater good in the end. Because so many suffered not one more will ever have to. We can not undo our past but we can learn our lessons and move on together.
