Women in society have not always had the role that they have today.  Many people remember the women suffrage movement but not always the role they had in society before the movement began.  Women in the 1800's were mainly seen as the one to maintain the house and children.  They were also not seen as equals to men in society, and sometimes still viewed as property instead of a human being.  Women at this time were also usually uneducated, for society thought at this time that women could not handle learning in a school setting.  From this overview alone, women's place according to society in the 1800's was in the home, running an orderly house and taking care of the estate.
In the poem "Dolores" by Algernon Charles Swinburn, there is a strong representation of how a woman was viewed in the 1800's by a man or even society.  More specifically just in the first stanza how he describes Dolores, alone, shows another side of thinking about women during this time.  The way Algernon Charles Swinburn describes her physical characteristics Dolores seems to be becoming weaker or losing strength, for the author asks what will she have left when she becomes weak.  The author also uses a tone here of some sadness mixed with some confusion.  Because during the 1800's it was a woman's place to run the house and the household affairs, and if a woman were to become to weak to preform these duties then what else was she going to do.  For women during this time were taught that this was there life, and if a woman could not preform her duties then she was useless.
This portrait is a great example of the roles between men and women during the 1800's.  On one side you have the men either sitting or having sort of lighter loads.  Where the women shown on the other side of the portrait are shown standing with baskets or bundles doing what society would have said doing what she was meant to do at this time.  In the 1800's there was a belief that women were to run the household affairs and at the same time tend to their husband and the men of the household.  Clearly the man was over the woman in the house and this portrait clearly illustrates that point.  This was also a philosophy in many homes during this time.
This is a text in which on its cover saying that it is for the women of Indiana, for the women of Indiana at this time could not write it themselves.  Women were still seen as they could not write something of this importance by themselves a lot of the time and so many time a man would write it on their behalf.  This is an instance where this is taking place, for the women behind this material more than likely could have written it themselves but because society frowned upon such behavior a man would step in so that the women would not have to go against society.  Once again this is a classic example of how women were viewed that their place was in the home taking care of the family.
