Welcome.
This space features an overview of technical, theoretical, and interpretive questions surrounding William Blake's Milton: A Poem. In what follows, we will develop connections between Blake's printing practice, his distinctive combination of text and image, his understanding of imagination, and the narrative of Milton. This project shares much of its content with a paper entitled "Text, Image, Book: Reading William Blake." Material specific to the paper focuses on the distinction in textual scholarship between the work and the text, while this exhibit discusses interpretation and the imagination in greater detail (and presents many more images). Most of the images in this exhibit come from The William Blake Archive, a groundbreaking digitization project led by Morris Eaves, Robert N. Essick, and Joseph Viscomi. It's worth a visit, or several. |
