Purtian Influences in Society and Literature

The Puritans arrived in America from England in the very early days of American colonization.  With them, they brought their own specific ways of religion, government, culture and lifestyle.  They were such an unique group of people, the impact they left on America is still evident.  The Puritans had their own way of doing things, and this was seen very clearly through their literature.  Puritan literature was shaped very clearly by their society, and following this era of American history influences of this literature and societal manners can still be seen.

Bradstreet's poem defines the extent religion plays in daily life at the time.  In the poem, her house is burnt down.  She laments over the loss of her possesions and blames God for taking what was hers away.  In the end, the comes to terms with the fact that her possesions are not hers, but God's.  God plays such a large role in Puritan literature.  His prescence is recongnized in nearly all works by Puritan authors.  In this particular one, Bradstreet humbles herself to God, because this is His world and everything is his.  It takes time for Bradstreet to realize this, but when she does, she repents for her misguided thoughts of materialism over the loss of her house.  God plays a vast role in Puritan life because they beleived everything around them belonged to God, which will give the impression of His power over the Puritans.

Literature & Theology in Colonial New England

In this literary review, the author discusses the attributes of Puritan religion and how it shaped Puritan literature.  It notes that Puritan liturature is very unique in itself, and even from other religious based literatures such as Anglican.  It is unique because of the intensity it places on God and the Bible.  The focus Puritan religion places on the Bible is reflected on the poems and prose in a heavy manner.  Also, these works are focused on a simple, unsophisticated people who devote themselves to their community and religion.

In this work, the author most notably credits the Puritans with the many impacts they left on modern American culture, including, but not limited to morality, education, limited government and the development of self-reliance.  These truths can be seen today and many aspects of daily life, more than three hundred years after the Purtians.
